Music and Shakespeare
- Synopsis
- Radio programme in which performances of scenes from Shakespeare’s plays alternate with music from various composers performed by the Birmingham Studio Pianoforte Sextet. A selection of Sullivan’s songs precedes the performance of Macbeth (Act II, scenes i-ii); Harty’s scenes from ‘An Easter Romance’ are followed by Act III iv from Hamlet. The ‘English Folk Song Suite’ by Vaughan Williams is played before a performance of Act IV i from The Merchant of Venice; the programme concludes with von Blon’s ‘Whispering Flowers’. The Shakespearean scenes are performed by Gladys Ward and Wortley Allen.
