Star Crossed

Synopsis
US television documentary. Set in New York City in the 1980s and 1990s the film tells the stories of two of New York’s most celebrated and defamed baseball stars - Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry - through the guise of Shakespeare. Sean Patrick Thomas uses Shakespeare as his guide to frame the tragic melodrama. The character study intersperses readings from Shakespeare’s works with comments from sports journalists, including Keith Olbermann, Len Berman and the late Dick Schaap. Topics covered include Gooden’s and Strawberry’s difficult childhoods in Tampa and Los Angeles, respectively; their meteoric rise and fall with the Mets in the 1980s; their battles with drug addiction and legal troubles; and their resurfacing in New York City as Yankees in the mid-1990s.
