Notes
The broadcast includes a 15-minute interval between scenes iii and iv, during which Hallam Fordham reads an excerpt from Keller’s educational novel, Der grune Heinrich (Green Henry), translated by Maud Holt.
General
The opera was completed in 1901. It premiered in 1907 at Komische Oper in Berlin, and three years later, when Thomas Beecham became the creative manager of Covent Garden in England, he included Delius’s opera in his first season there.

Gotffried Keller’s Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe (A Village Romeo and Juliet) was published in 1876.
