- Synopsis
- Feature film. Set in a mime theatre in Paris in the 1820s, tells the story of a free-spirited young woman, Garance, and four men who fall in love with her. There are two scenes from Othello (including V ii, the murder of Desdemona - Brasseur plays Othello) which cast oblique reflection on the plot and several quotations from the play throughout the film.

- The film was shot in Paris and Nice during the Nazi occupation and released in 1945. The Nazis banned all films over about 90 minutes in length, so Carne made two films, confident he could show them together after the war was over. The film opened in Paris immediately after the liberation, and ran for 54 weeks. It is said to play somewhere in Paris every day.
