Hamlet: The Trouble with Hamlet

Synopsis
Educational series. One in a twelve-part series of films made by the Ontario Educational Communications Authority (now TV Ontario). The aim was to relate ‘Shakespeare’s timeless ideas and understanding of human motivations to contemporary society’. The emphasis is on Hamlet’s existentialist dilemma, stressing Camus’ dictum ‘there is but one truly philosophical problem, and that is suicide’. Actors play scenes from the play including the ‘to be, or not to be’ soliloquy (III i) and Hamlet’s confrontation with Ophelia.
