Synopsis
A series studying the history of theatre. This programme examines attempts by characters in Henry VIII to play power games. Introduced by Niccolo Machiavelli, scenes from Shakespeare’s Henry VIII depict the king’s struggle to consolidate power as absolute monarch. Through highlighting the play’s subtext, the film reveals how Cardinal Wolsey, Queen Catherine of Aragon, and Anney Boleyn, each played their own game of power. Edited by Francine Douwes.
