- 16-part television series, presented by John Gielgud, on the history of poetry in the English language. This episode follows Shakespeare’s development as dramatist and poet. Presents extracts from Romeo and Juliet, King Henry V, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, Cymbeline and Prospero’s farewell speech from The Tempest. Performers include John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, and Ralph Richardson. Filmed in the 16th-century house and grounds of Beckley Park, Oxfordshire.
