Derek Walcott

Synopsis
Interview series hosted by Bill Moyers. In this programme Moyers interviews West Indian poet and playwright, Derek Walcott. Among the topics discussed are the threats posed by poets to the establishment, Walcott’s fascination with the story of Robinson Crusoe as a metaphor for imperialism, and the idea of the United States as a democratic empire. Walcott speaks of Caliban’s colonial sensitivity in The Tempest and the contradiction inherent in perceptions of imperialism as both protector and oppressor.
