Synopsis
One of a series made in co-operation with Station WQED Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon University and The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Stratford-upon-Avon. A companion film, MACBETH, provides an abbreviated version of the play. The programme discusses the historical background to the play including King James’ preoccupation with witches, the preaching of homilies on the doctrine of passive obedience, and the Gunpowder Plot.
