- Synopsis
- Radio programme comprised of songs from or inspired by Shakespeare’s plays and a performance of a scene from Romeo and Juliet.
From 21:00-21:10 Gilbert Bailey (baritone) sings songs from Twelfth Night:"O Mistress Mine" (W.M.Byrd, 1600), "Come Away, Death" (J.H. Arne, 1741), "When That I Was" (J. Vernon, 1763). These are followed by "Under the Greenwood Tree" from As You Like It (J. H. Arne, 1741) and "Sign No More, Ladies" from Much Ado About Nothing (Stevens, 1790). At 21:10 Nora Delmarr (soprano) presents Morley’s "It Was a Lover and His Lass" and Arne’s "Where the Bee Sucks". At 21:20 J.C.B. Carter and Isabel Emery perform the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. From 21:40-21:50 Bailey presents "Who is Sylvia" (Schubert’s take on Two Gentleman of Verona), Quilter’s "Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind" from King Lear and Hubert Parry’s "England", inspired by Gaunt’s speech in Richard II. Nora Delmarr ends the programme with a rendition of Arne’s "When Icicles hang by the Wall". - Language
