Romeo et Juliette

Alternative title: Romeo and Juliet
Synopsis: Documentary focusing on the Paris Opera Ballet’s 1995 production of Romeo et Juliette, mise-en-scene and choreography by Rudolph Nureyev. The principal dancers Elisabeth Maurin and Manuel Legris and other cast members are seen at work with rehearsal mistress Patricia Ruanne and there are brief excerpts from the finished production. Topics covered in the interviews include the circumstances of the ballet’s creation for the London Festival Ballet in 1977, Nureyev’s emphasis on the rapid progression of events and the cinematic quality of the scenario. Also included are a brief history of Shakespeare’s play, a discussion of Prokofiev’s score and scene designs for various productions of Nureyev’s version as well as designs for Serge Lifar’s 1955 version at the Opera.
