Synopsis
Radio programme of classical music marking the ‘Ides of March’ by showcasing music inspired by Julius Caesar and other Shakespearean plays. The programme is presented by Nick Bailey. The musical pieces comprise: Handel’s Giulio Cesare - Overture, performed by
Les musicians du Louvre (conductor Marc Minkowski);
Mendelssohn’s incidental music A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Sandrine Piau, Delphine Collot (soprano) and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées (Philippe Herreweghe conducts); excerpts from Romeo and Juliet by Berlioz with Carlo Maria Giulini conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Doyle’s Henry V (St Crispian’s Day, Battle of Agincourt) as performed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with conductor Simon Rattle; Le mort de Cléopatre by Berlioz is sung by Veronique Gens (soprano) with Louis Langrée conducting the Lyon Opera Orchestra; Shostakovich’s Hamlet Opus 32 is performed by Louise Winter (soprano) and David Wilson-Johnson (baritone).
