Synopsis

Prior to the 2004 season at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, ‘Star-Crossed Lovers’, Heather Neill talks to its artistic director, Mark Rylance. Rylance talks about young people who commit suicide and the work of the Samaritans. He speaks of Friars in Shakespeare’s plays (Romeo and Juliet, Measure for Measure, Much Ado About Nothing) and the counselling work they do. He talks about acting in the Globe’s space and believes that what is important in theatre happens between the actors and the audience. Rylance speaks of single-sex casting including the all-female Much Ado About Nothing. The talk concludes with Rylance’s comments on the Globe’s Education work.
