Shakespeare: The History Plays, Part 1

Synopsis
Michael Boyd, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, speaks about the cycle of Shakespeare’s history plays which he has directed. He also speaks of the advantages of the thrust stage and how it unites audiences and actors. When it is suggested that Stratford will no longer have a proscenium arch he says that The Other Place could erect a small proscenium stage when it re-opens and the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre may have a lower thrust stage more closely resembling the design of the Rose. Boyd states that the cinema killed the proscenium arch ‘stone dead’. He speaks of the character of Falstaff and David Warner’s return to the RSC.

General
Theatrevoice is a website for audio content about British theatre, and features journalists from across the UK as well as press and practitioners from across the theatre industry. It was set up in 2003 to see if theatre could be talked about in a new way: allowing critics to be more expansive than the usual space constraints of the print media allowed. In 2008, V&A Theatre Collections and Rose Bruford College, London agreed to support the site in partnership. (http://www.theatrevoice.com/about_us/, accessed 7/2010)

The sequel to this interview was recorded on 1/5/2008 (see separate entry).
