Synopsis
A documentary based on Peter Stein’s 1976 production of As You Like It (Stein’s first Shakespeare play), at the Schaubühne. The research process was extensive, with lectures on Elizabethan stagecraft and a company field trip to Warwickshire. The company transformed the research into SHAKESPEARE’S MEMORY, four hours of masked processions, Morris dancing, mummers plays and extracts from the plays.

General
As You Like It premiered in September 1977. The action began in an cool, ice-blue chamber, with the actors performing in a restrained manner throughout the first two acts. in Act III, audiences were led in single file through a tunnel filled with the sounds of the forest into the labyrinth of Arden. The stage production lasted seven hours over two evenings and was performed by twenty members of the Schaubuehne,
