Shakespeare in the Global Village: Shakespeare and the Audience
- Alternative title
- Shakespeare and the Audience
- Synopsis
- Two papers given during the First World Shakespeare Congress, held in Vancouver, B.C.
Prof. G.R. Hibbard, University of Waterloo, discusses
Shakespeare’s use of dramatic poetry and the duality of his vision. Prof. Hibbard discusses Shakespeare’s
craft in writing poetry and the role of this poetry in
creating inter-relationships between speech and action. He also examines the ‘major-minor’ fluctuations of mood that Shakespeare uses for dramatic effects using examples from Titus Andronicus, Love’s Labour’s Lost, Romeo and Juliet and Falstaff’s character to illustrate his comments (30 mins).
Prof. T.J.B. Spencer, University of Birmingham, England, examines Shakespeare’s periodic carelessness in the craft of writing drama.
Prof. Spencer feels that by examining Shakespeare’s
lapses we can glean more of the real man and his style than by constantly praising Shakespeare as ‘that
perfect English institution’. Specifically Prof.
Spencer examines Shakespeare’s careless naming of
characters, Polonius (Hamlet), Lord Bardolf and Bardolf (Henry IV part II), and Jacques (As You Like It). Prof. Spencer also looks at Shakespeare’s sometimes haphazard ‘character drawing’, especially as seen in Julius Caesar, Richard III and Coriolanus. He concludes by asserting that Shakespeare does not always write "as good a play" as some contemporary critics like to think and write about. However, the presence of these slight lapses of Shakespeare’s craft demand a more flexible critical attitude than had previously been used (30 mins). - Series
