Romeo and Juliet: Love of the Elizabethan Era

Synopsis
Dr. Marion Smith, Brock University, explores the stylised love of the Elizabethan era. She draws extensive comparisons between the love story of Romeo and Juliet, and the ancient love myth, as seen in the Tristan and Iseult, and the Mars and Venus legends. Dramatic excerpts are taken from the Shakespeare Recording Society’s production of Romeo and Juliet, and musical excerpts from Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet (40 mins). Dr. Marion Smith, Dr. Johanna Stuckey and Dr. William Whitelaw, further discuss the myth of Tristan and Iseult and how it is presented in Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, and Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights. They also discuss Franco Zeffierelli’s film ROMEO AND JULIET, commenting on its strength and weaknesses (20 mins).
