Synopsis
Feature film. Gilbert Valence (Piccoli) is an aging actor who is in the prime of his career, enjoying prominent roles in both theatre and film. During a performance of Ionesco’s Exit the King , with Valence’s king weeping over his lost throne, three men arrive backstage to deliver tragic news: Valence’s wife and two children have been killed in a car accident. Saddened but undefeated, Valence continues with the simple daily activities that bring him pleasure. His new role as Prospero in The Tempest provides him with an opportunity to start a new relationship - with the young actress playing Miranda. There is a scene from the production in which Gilbert gives Prospero’s speech ‘my revels now are ended’.
