Barrio Wars
- Synopsis
- Feature film crime drama. Latino independent film. Romeo and Juliet set in the Los Angeles barrio. Despite their status in rival gangs, Plato (an aspiring rap artist) and Angelina meet at a costume party and fall in love. Angelina’s psychotic brother, Rico, attacks the gang associated with Plato’s family and when Plato intervenes Rico kills Plato’s sister, Vanessa. In revenge Plato kills Rico’s right-hand man. To throw her brother off the trial, Angelina fakes her own death on video. Plato sees the tape and not having seen Angelina’s message about it, kills himself. When Angelina sees his dead body she shoots herself. Lanier (op cit) notes the film remains relatively faithful to Shakespeare’s plot and is unapologetically violent.
