- Synopsis
- Radio series in which contemporary writers reflect on the theme of Jaques’s ‘Seven Ages of Man’ speech in the form of dramatic monologues.
The last episode is a repeat broadcast of a play for one voice written in Irish by Liam Ó Muirthile, performed by Eamon Kelly. It examines the last stage of life - ‘second childishness and mere oblivion’. As he approaches death, an old man’s mind wanders between reality, memory and imagination as he struggles to come to terms with his life, both conscious and unconscious. - Eamon Kelly came out of retirement to record TRAENACHA a few months before he died. One of the attractions of Liam Ó Muirthile’s script may have been how far the play’s only persona was from the traditional seanchaí, often played by Eamon in his one-man shows. (RTE programme notes)
