Terry Hands RSC Director to Resign
- Synopsis
- News item. Following his statement made two weeks previously that he intends to resign as Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1991, Terry Hands talks to Stephen Phillips. He criticises the funding policies and priorities of the Arts Council who he thinks are fearful and believe themselves to be an arm of Government. Hands thinks the notion of the nation funding its own arts is being eroded and the wrong emphasis is put upon sponsorship and commercialism. Hands defends keeping a London base in the Barbican. He also criticises the press, especially The Sunday Times. Hands talks about succession(but mentions no names) and thinks the job is best done by two Artistic Directors (as he did with Trevor Nunn). He finally speaks of his work as a Shakespeare director and states that ‘one never properly realises a Shakespeare play’.
