Shakespeare: Antony and Cleopatra
- Synopsis
- Gregory Doran talks to Heather Neill about his 2006 production of Antony and Cleopatra for the Royal Shakespeare Company, his first production in the Complete Works Festival. He speaks of the epic and domestic nature of the play and how the Swan Theatres supports the intimate nature. He thinks of Egypt and Rome as being horizontal and vertical worlds. Doran sees Antony as a portrait of a man disintegrating. He speaks of the play-acting nature of the relationship, there being only once scene when Antony and Cleopatra are alone. Doran talks about the role of the Clown, the lovers being older, how Cleopatra would have been played by a boy in Shakespeare’s time. He relates a visit to Egypt where he looked for images of Cleopatra and talks at some length on the role and character of Enobarbus and John Hopkins’ playing of Octavius Caesar.

- General
- Theatrevoice is a website for audio content about British theatre, and features journalists from across the UK as well as press and practitioners from across the theatre industry. It was set up in 2003 to see if theatre could be talked about in a new way: allowing critics to be more expansive than the usual space constraints of the print media allowed. In 2008, V&A Theatre Collections and Rose Bruford College, London agreed to support the site in partnership. (http://www.theatrevoice.com/about_us/, accessed 7/2010)
