Notes
The production opened at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, press night 3 August 1994. There were some changes to the cast in the transfer to the Barbican. The production went to the United States and was recorded by TOFT at a performance given at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, New York City May 25 1996. The RSC also recorded, on a single camera, a performance at the Barbican 29 April 1995 and the National Video Archive of Performance recorded, on three cameras, a performance at the Barbican 19 August 1995. These recordings are catalogued separately.

Adrian Noble’s 1996 film was based on the design and concept of this stage production.
Awards
Anthony Ward won an Olivier Award for Best Costume Designer for this production.
