Notes: The production opened at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, press night 3 August 1994. There were some changes to the cast in the transfer to the Barbican. The production went to the United States and was recorded by TOFT at a performance given at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, New York City May 25 1996. The RSC also recorded, on a single camera, a performance at the Barbican 29 April 1995 and the National Video Archive of Performance recorded, on three cameras, a performance at the Barbican 19 August 1995. These recordings are catalogued separately.
General: Adrian Noble’s 1996 film was based on the design and concept of this stage production.
Awards: Anthony Ward won an Olivier Award for Best Costume Designer for this production.
