Judi Dench

Synopsis
Documentary. Melvyn Bragg interviews Judi Dench at the Rose Theatre, Kingston where she is appearing as Titania in Peter Hall’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There are no extracts from the production although Judi Dench talks about it briefly. She says she can recite every line of the play. There is a brief extract from Peter Hall’s 1968 film of the play where again Dench played Titania. There is an inserted clip of Hall talking about verse speaking as does Dench who also speaks of her instinctive acting technique. Includes an extract from Playing Shakespeare where John Barton guides Dench (Viola) and Richard Pasco in a passage from Twelfth Night. Also a brief extract from Macbeth (1979) staged by Trevor Nunn with Dench as Lady Macbeth. Judi Dench believes Shakespeare to be ‘endlessly speculative’.
