Depictions of Obesity

Synopsis
4-part radio series on the history of obesity. In episode 2 Dr Hilary Jones explores how corpulence has been portrayed throughout history in fine arts, anthropology music and literature. Dr Jones discusses the archetype of the ‘fat man’ as created by Shakespeare in the figure of Falstaff and how this gives an indication about the social attitudes of the time. The programme features readings, archive clips and a visit to Tate Britain’s ‘Rude Britannia’ exhibition.
