Vanessa Redgrave

Synopsis
Channel Four early evening news item. Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Dalton in rehearsal at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, London (the production had a pre-London run season at the Mold’s Theatr, Clwyd). Scenes from Act IV, sc. xv (Cleopatra receiving Antony in her monument). Commentary states this is Redgrave’s first Shakespearean role for 13 years. Vanessa Redgrave speaks about playing the role and theatre critic Sheridan Morley offers some reminiscences of when he first encountered her. Redgrave says there is no other Shakespearean role she wants to play; although perhaps Cleopatra again when she ‘has a stick’. Note: Vanessa Redgrave did play the role again some ten years late in 1997 with David Harewood as Antony. Reporter is Stephen Phillips.
