Burden of Dreams

Synopsis
Les Blank’s documentary about the making of Werner Herzog’s FITZCARRALDO (1982). When FITZCARRALDO was first underway it starred Jason Robards as Fitzcarraldo and Mick Jagger as his sidekick Wilbur. Production delays and Robards’ ill-health meant both withdrew from the film, but a few scenes were shot and can be seen in BURDEN OF DREAMS. And in one Jagger recites Richard III’s opening speech to Robards ending ‘I am determined to prove a villain’. In the final film of course there is no Wilbur character and Herzog’s original intentions remain unknown; who knows what further Shakespearean outpourings from Jagger are now lost to film history. [With acknowledgment to Luke McKernan for providing the synopsis].
