Synopsis

Barbara Gaines, founder and artistic director of the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, talks about the company’s evolution from a classical acting workshop to a major institution. She discusses her own background, including training at Northwestern University and acting in NYC, alongside her approach to classical theatre, the expanding repertoire of the company, the nature of the Chicago theatre community, the development of Chicago Shakespeare’s international work, and her plans for the company’s future -- including a 1,000 proscenium theatre to complement the current 500 seat thrust stage.
