Marlowe, Shakespeare and the Jews
- Synopsis
- Joel Hurstfield, Astor Professor of English History at University College, London questions whether Marlowe and Shakespeare ever met a Jew? Professor Hurstfield asks this question in the light of The Jew of Malta and The Merchant of Venice and asks whether these plays are anti-semitic. A consideration of these questions in turn raises the fundamental one of toleration in Elizabethan society.
