Synopsis
Radio broadcast. A reading by Ian McDiarmid of James Shapiro’s book of the same title which is an account of the extraordinary year in which Shakespeare wrote King Lear, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra. Abridged by Anna Magnusson. 1: The Theatre. In 1606, Shakespeare was writing for a royal family hungry for new entertainment while the threats of plague, insurrection and rebellion threatened English society.
