- Synopsis
- Recording of an illustrated lecture by Kathryn Smith in which she explores how some of Shakespeare’s works have been adapted for opera. Some the works discussed include adaptations of Macbeth (Verdi, Bloch), Othello (Rossini, Verdi), Hamlet (Faccio, Thomas), Romeo and Juliet (Benda, Zingarelli, Vaccai, Bellini, Delius and Gounod), Julius Caesar (Bianchi), various adaptations of The Tempest that do not survive; A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten), depictions of Falstaff derived from The Merry Wives of Windsor (Salieri, Verdi) and Henry IV part 1 (Holst, Vaughan Williams); Much Ado About Nothing (Berlioz, Villiers Stanford), The Taming of the Shrew (Goetz, Giannini, Shebalin) and Antony and Cleopatra (Barber). The lecture is followed by a brief Q&A.
