Tourism on Screen
Professor David Martin-Jones, University of Glasgow
Overview
Description
This playlist draws together a range of film and television shows which relate to screen tourism (tourism prompted by seeing or even just hearing about film and television shows). As this is a very broad and interdisciplinary field which scholars approach from Tourism Studies, Business and Management, Film and Television Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, and so on, the playlist offers a number of entrance points into this fascinating topic. These range from screen tourism and heritage (e.g. how a diaspora might visit a country of origin after seeing its roots imagined on screen, from The Quiet Man to Outlander) to film and television shows which now feature on actual screen tours (Sex and the City, The Third Man), to films which enable consideration of the environment and societal impacts of screen tourism (e.g. The Beach, Mamma Mia), to films made in conjunction with tourism agencies (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara), amongst others.
