- Reading juvenile court, 1st August 1985. Interview with social worker Christine Walby. The baby born, a junkie in a Reading Hospital is to stay in the care of the county council. But social workers said tonight they hoped to be able to help the child’s parents overcome their drug addiction so they could be reunited with their daughter. Reading juvenile court ruled that the baby had been ill-treated before being born. Penny Silvester reports on today’s hearing, and the problem of babies born to junkie mothers. The mother has 29-years-old, is an heroine addicted and the baby girl needs protection. The parents are distressed with the verdict of the judge, but unless they give up addiction, it will not be possible for them to look after the baby. [Box 2]
