Babcock and Wilcox Ltd. began trading as boilermakers in Glasgow in 1881, part of the Babcock & Wilcox Company of New York, USA. London and Manchester offices of the firm opened in 1884. The UK company, Babcock & Wilcox Ltd, was incorporated in London in January 1891.
In 1895, Babcock and Wilcox purchased a works in Refrew, and then the Stirling Boiler Co. in 1906.
By the 1980s, the company was multinational with six divisions: Energy, Contracting, FATA European, Industrial and Electrical Products, North American and Overseas. The company is concerned with the design, manufacture and erection of a wide range of engineering plant, and the provision of related services. It is now known as Doosan Babcock Energy.
