- Summary
- All bridges spanning the Volturno River were wrecked by the retreating Germans. In order to cross the river, troops are transported by assault boats under cover of darkness but still met enemy opposition from the land and the air. Allied engineers set about the major problem of erecting pontoon bridges, not least of their difficulties being the swollen river caused by heavy rains. On completion of a bridge, infantry and supplies cross.
