- Summary
- American troops in the village of Insigny. Villagers begin to trickle back and given food by their liberators. On towards Carentan and aerial views show the German-flooded defences. Vast areas were flooded when the Germans opened the sluice gates which control the flood water. In Carentan the Americans are warmly welcomed by the villagers. Fires still burning in the town are put out by local fire brigade and townspeople. North of Caen the British Airborne Division have smashed all attacks by the 12th Panzer Division and established a foothold across the River Orne. St Marie du Mont another village in our possession. 7th British Army firing into German lines. The town of Montebourg where the Americans demonstrate a captured German midget tank, remote controlled. Canadian troops evacuate Public Relations HQ after it is hit by a shell. Troops on the road between Caen and Bayeux. Arrival of General de Gaulle on Normandy beach and in the town of Bayeux where he is received by cheering crowds. The King also arrives in Normandy and is greeted by Montgomery. He holds investiture in a field.
