Summary
Units of the 8th Army enter the outskirts of Florence against stiff resistance from the Germans. Shellfire over the roofs of the city is put up by the enemy and the famous Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge still standing, is one of the targets. British, New Zealand and South African troops take part in street fighting and a building that was used as an SS Headquarters is entered. Italian partisans help the allies in liquidating snipers. Then the main body of troops enters the town to a welcome from civilians.
