- Summary
- The citadel overlooking the harbour of St Malo where there is still some Nazi resistance comes under bombardment. US troops advance cautiously through the town. German troops from the garrison are led away. The garrison commander Colonel Von Aulock (Madman of St Malo) and his orderly the worse for drink are also marched off. Canadian troops in the town of Trun and south-east to Orleans deserted by the Germans. Men of the Maquis come out of hiding and with arms kept in readiness for this day they await their turn to fight. Citizens of Chartres are free again with the speed of the allied advance. German prisoners are rounded up in New Orleans, also collaborators who are jeered by angry crowd. In Le Mans life is getting back to normal with US troops very prominent. French newspapers are on sale again, but this time they are able to tell the truth. French flags fly from dominant buildings in London and crowds wait on the steps of St Paul’s awaiting the news of the liberation of Paris.
