- Summary
- Bridging the Chindwin during the 14th Army’s drive on Kalewa. Supplies are dropped by air to the troops and tribesmen of the Chin Hills collect them. Each soldier carries on his back about 50 lbs of pack and equipment besides his arms and ammunition, and will probably carry five days rations with them too. The flag of the Fifth Indian Division now flies over Kalewa. Bailey bridge is built across the Chinwin River by Bengal sappers and miners and they finished the job in 26 working hours. It is the largest floating Bailey bridge ever built anywhere in the war. 365 yards long. Troops and equipment crossing the bridge. Men of the 11th East African Division are among them. Jap fighters attacking are driven off by ack-ack batteries.
