Summary
RAF and American fighters, with small arms fire from the RAF regiment and ack-ack defences combined to make a kill of well over 300 enemy planes, when several hundred ME109s and FW190s with few jets, flew over airfields of the Second Tactical Air Force in Holland and Belgium in a multi-pronged raid. RAF fighter pilots accepted the challenge and scramble to their aircraft to give battle in what turned out to be a record for any single day since the war started. Shortly before the big attack, US aircraft were busy shooting up enemy fighters in the normal run of duty as these combat pictures show. Combat film taken from an RAF Tempest shows another Tempest following a German fighter going down on fire. Wrecked planes are seen scattered over the countryside.
