- US 8th Air Force bomb and strafe Fort de Royan, a German held pocket of resistance on the French atlantic coast. In Denmark, Mosquitoes of the RAF Second TAF attack at low-level a Gestapo HQ at Oden Say. Lancasters of Bomber Command carrying 12,000 lb bombs attack a German pocket battleship the "Lutzow" in its Baltic base at Swinemunde. Brilliantly placed near-misses rip the ship apart below the water-line. The end of Hitler’s last battleship. Leipzig, sixth largest city of Germany, is now in Allied hands. Focal point of one of the largest rail networks in Germany, the RAF gave it plenty of attention. Inside the town hall the Mayor, his wife and daughter had poisoned themselves, and outside sporadic fighting went on for a while before the streets were finally cleared. White flags being waved by civilians in the streets. 50,000 German prisoners crowd into an American cage, they range from seven generals down to the Hitler Youth, and only thirty-five Americans are required to guard them.
