Summary
From the air it looked like the wartime blitz on London. But this was not war. It was arson, looting and death, a race riot blown up into something beyond control. In Harlem, New York’s Negro quarter, a similar pattern of violence flared up. Police battle to keep control. In Washington President Johnson warned that the lawlessness would not be tolerated.
