Summary
The pound was down. Devaluation was the answer the Government resorted to in the effort to get the Nation back on a firm financial footing. The city was a strangely quiet place on the first day of devaluation week. It was moneyless Monday. The Stock Exchange was empty. Brokers and jobbers weren’t allowed to do business, but they packed the pavements of Throgmorton Street to talk and to guess how the Market would react when business resumed. City banks were closed - the shutters were up for one day while the staff inside made adjustments before opening their doors again. Devaluation is a drastic measure, but it may be the way to solve Britain’s money troubles.
