Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Royal Tour Continued - Opening Parliament. DESCRIPTION: The Royal Family attend a race meeting which had been specially arranged by the South African Turf Club. They also visited Simon’s Town Naval Base to see Cadets in training. The climax of the Capetown visit was the opening of Parliament. SHOTLIST: CUT STORY: KS Elevated shot of Royal cars driving through thickly populated street. MS Royal car driving along racecourse. SCU Smuts dressed in civilian clothes and trilby hat - farmer style. King, Queen and Princesses alight from car, slightly elevated shot of Royal Family walking towards camera to Royal Box. Cut-ins of crowds seated. GV paddock - horses paraded - No 8 Menlo winner of the Cape of Good Hope Derby Stakes. Start of race - horses out of camera, pan horses running, rounding bend. Cut-ins of Royal Box, occupants look through field glasses. Horses race up straight to finish. SLIP PAN At Simon’s Town, King inspects Naval Guard of Honour. Inspects contingent of Botha Boys. Various angle shots of three young girls, presenting bouquets to the Queen and two Princesses. SLIP PAN At Capetown, elevated shot of Royal Car followed by procession passing through crowded streets, cheering etc. CU of King and Queen in car, King in naval uniform, the Queen in court dress with train, also wears a coronet. Both are wearing the Order of the Garter. GV Parliament - Senate House. Royal car arrives, King and Queen alight, several shots of them posing. GV of Senate House shows balconies, windows etc. crowded with people. Walk up steps to door of Senate. Interior - King and Queen walk down aisle to thrones. King and Queen stand in front of thrones. King and Queen sitting on thrones. Gentlemen Usher of the Black Rod bows to them, then members of the Chamber. He then leads the King and Queen along aisle as they leave. Cut-ins of Members of Parliament and presumably their wives on balconies overlooking the Senate. Exterior - King and Queen pose at door for cameramen. Queen acknowledges crowd. Cheering and waving crowds. Walk to car, cut-in of Highland Regiment dipping the Union Jack in salute. King and Queen enter car, and drive off. Elevated shot of mounted troops - Household Cavalry passing through crowded streets. SLIP PAN King in civilian clothing, lounge suit, with Smuts at Stellenbosch, crowds around them. Shot of them at Parrl. Royal Family bidding goodbye and boarding train, cut-ins of crowds waving. CU King and Queen standing at window of train waving. GV Royal train pulling out with Vanguard in background.
