- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Royal Family Welcomed Home. DESCRIPTION: The People of Britain conscious of the far reaching effect of the long and strenuous South African tour, offer Their Majesties and the Princesses the warmest of welcomes on their safe return. SHOTLIST: KS GV Buckingham Palace with traffic in the foreground. MS HMS Vanguard lying off island of St Helena. Royal Family seated in native boat, naval craft in background, Royal Family being rowed ashore, followed by the Queen, Princess Margaret and Princess Elizabeth. Several shots of them walking through grounds of Governor’s House. Royal Family look at huge tortoise. CU tortoise. CU tortoise eating banana. Elevated shot of St Helena, also elevated GV of same. Shots of island as seen from Vanguard. Two Princesses in overalls in engine room, several shots of them turning wheels etc. Royal Family on deck walk towards camera. Ship’s compliment before Royal Family. Captain Agnew presents wallet to King, then brooch to Queen. CU Queen fixing brooch on her dress. Ship’s compliment paraded on deck, Royal Family seated with them, several group shots - very good. Aerial Vanguard passing up Channel. LS Southsea, as seen from Vanguard as it passes along coast, several shots of crowds on shore, cut-ins of Royal family on deck and officers and ratings lining decks. King looks through field glasses towards shore. Shots of crowds waving, cheering on shore. Royal Family on bridge looking towards bows of ship. Several shots of Vanguard and crowds. Vanguard steaming along coast towards Portsmouth. GV Vanguard, decks manned. Line thrown ashore and placed over bollard. CU bollard. GV Vanguard bows in fore - very good. Gangway slung aboard, Duke of Gloucester goes aboard (dressed in army uniform), shakes hands with the King, shakes hands and kisses the Queen and two Princesses. Group on ship. SLIP PAN King steps ashore, followed by rest of Royal Family they stop halfway along gangway, pan to ship’s complement lining ship; they give three cheers, King steps ashore talks (silent) to Admiral Fraser. Portsmouth Dockyard Royal Marines form Guard of Honour, flag dipped during playing of National Anthem. Royal Family board car and drive off through archway and cheering crowds. Royal Family walk to railway station, accompanied by Mayor etc. Royal Standard taken down and replaced by White Ensign. Royal train pulls out of Portsmouth, fade out and in, trains enters Waterloo Station, At platform, King is greeted by Duke of Wellington, Mr Attlee, Mr Chuter Ede, etc, followed by the Queen and two Princesses. Queen, King and Princesses enter open carriage. Carriage drives off, out of Waterloo Station, into York Road, crowds line route, cheering, waving etc. LS carriage crossing Westminster Bridge, with Houses of Parliament in background - very good. Procession down Whitehall, turns into Admiralty Arch, down Mall into camera, cut-ins of crowds cheering, waving etc. Procession rounds Queen Victoria Memorial, entering Buckingham Palace, tilt up to Royal Standard flying over Palace. Shot from roof of Palace, shows huge crowds outside, crowds rush towards rails. Various shots of crowds rushing to Palace rails, cut-ins of King, Queen and two Princesses coming out on balcony, various shots. SCU of Royal Family on balcony to finish.
