- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Macarthur Tells Congress. DESCRIPTION: There was a sympathetic reception for General MacArthur, when he came to make his dramatic address to Congress. In New York, MacArthur’s appearance evoked the greatest shower of confetti and ticker-tape ever known. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. MS MacArthur makes his way through dense crowd. MacArthur inside Congress. Congressmen stands as he enters, afterwards sitting down. MacArthur addresses Congress denying that he is a warmonger & asserted that his views on the prosecution of the war in Korea were shared by every military leader connected with the campaign, including the US Joint Chiefs of Staff . Now I just fade away - an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him to do it. Goodbye. Cut-ins during of cheering & applause. Above is a Washington DC. At New York - Elevated GV of drive through packed streets, ticker tape & confetti raining down on MacArthur as he drives through in full regalia. Various shots of ticker tape (mass) falling. Elevated GV of mass crowds outside New York City Hall to finish. Speech: I address you with neither rancor nor bitterness. In the fading twilight of life there is one purpose in mind to serve my country. I have been severely criticised in lay circles principally abroad, despite my understanding that from a military stand point the above views have been fully shared in part by practically every military leader concerned with the Korean campaign including our own Government Chiefs of Staff. An old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the right to see that duty . Good bye.
