- Churchill makes a speech:-. We survey the scene without complacency but I am left with growing confidence. We feel entitled to ask for your approval and encouragement both in what has been done and in the important work this parliament still has to do. Thanks to a wise and resolute financial policy with a lot of say ‘no’ in it. We have restored national government overnight. We are re-building, it was quite a natural mistake, to come to very well. We are re-building the precious reserves which three years ago were draining at an alarming rate. We are paying our way again and repaying the dollar loans our predecessors contracted. This new spirit of confident endeavour in the land. I now come to something which one cannot feel happy about, on the contrary, the grievous injustice and hardship which was inflicted on the old age pensioners and others in similar position by the shrinkage in what money can buy during the reign of the Socialist party from 1945 to 1951. We have only so far remedied this evil by a half a crown added by the Chancellor to pensions in 1952. The old age pensions will be a principal feature of the new session of parliament. Churchill’s speech continues -. In the vast tumultuous world which towers up around us, in the shadow of the nuclear age no single country can control its destiny alone. The London Agreement represents the widest possible measure of common agreement in present circumstances major concessions were made by all of the governments concerned. I think I am entitled to refer specially to the contribution made by this country and also by Doctor Adenauer. I must say that it has been suggested in Paris that the French Prime Minister should now be asked to re-open negotiations and seek further major concessions to meet this or that requirement. This in my view is quite out of the question. I have good hopes that for the free nations persevere soberly and patiently together we may rescue, rescue the future of mankind. I thank you very much for you time.
