Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Australian Flood Aftermath. DESCRIPTION: Maitland, New South Wales - and the evacuation of thousands of homeless victims from the worst floods Australia has ever known. These latest pictures, if not so dramatic as the scenes of the floods at their peak, underline the appalling aftermath. SHOTLIST: Various shots of the unfortunate people being evacuated. Climbing on ‘Ducks’ - children first - then their parents and other adults. Ducks negotiating the still high waters in parts. CU of a Red Cross box. Then a hall in which people, mostly women are working on the distribution of clothing and other provisions. Then a queue of the victims outside a Salvation Army establishment. CU of a woman taking provisions away. CU a man taking a NoSle of clothing. GV of main street showing the devastation and the mud and debris. The camera pans round Maitland. Dreadful scenes of destruction. Cars wrecked. Lorries and buses left high and dry in unusual places around the town. Various shots of houses severely damaged by the floods. One wall of a house washed away. Then a shot of divers from the nearby ‘Spear-fishers’ club diving under the muddy water to investigate damaged water mains. Shovels slicing into the thick mud. GV men working to clear the mud by hand in a shop front. CU a mechanical ‘Scraper’ working in the main street.
