MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Sound Interview With Sir John Harding. DESCRIPTION: Field Marshal Sir John Harding has to deal with the situation, arising from a persistent demand for union with Greece. Sir John, who recently returned from Cyprus to report and consult, gave an interim talk. SHOTLIST: Panning shot of Cyprus. Various street scenes in Cyprus. Makes speech I believe that the most important factor that is more in mind when we are considering the future of Cyprus is the fact that it does occupy a very important strategic position, not only in regard to British military effort in the Middle East, but in relation to its position on the right back of NATO helps to protect its shore and in regard to a very ??? The situation at present on a constitutional side is that Her Majesty’s government have offered the people of Cyprus a little constitution which if accepted and put into effect would give a very large measure of self government to the people of Cyprus. If the leaders of public opinion in Cyprus, small sections of the community would come forward and co-operate with the government in the framing of the constitution, I and my officials would be only too ready to start work on this at once.
