- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Duke of Edinburgh at Oxford. DESCRIPTION: People came from all over the world to the Duke’s Study Conference on the Human problems of Industrial Communities within the Commonwealth and Empire. SHOTLIST: Various shots of the Duke of Edinburgh shaking hands with various nationalities. Slip pan to Duke preparing to give speech. Crowds clapping hands. Duke speaking: Let me make it quite clear that you have not been asked here to be taught anything. What we learn here we learn from each other. I know that undergraduates also, can learn many things from each other, but I don’t suppose that the University necessarily approves of everything they learn that way, but I think and can assure the Chancellor that he’d have no worries about it on that score. The whole success of the conference depends not on what you decide but what you talk about and the opinions however provocative which are aired. It may not be very easy to decide quite what we are aiming at in this modern world of ours, but whatever the target we must take into account that all people are primary citizens and not just workers with a bit of private life. I see no advantage in a prosperous and powerful state if it is to be achieved with the expense of human freedom and happiness.
